A Win, Win, Win for MD Apple Corps
and Dulaney High School. . .

Larry Carton (white shirt), MD Apple Corps, looks on as we watch the
PowerPoint demo. Larry helped plan the event, and brought along the digital camera.

The UGAcademy Grant iBooks are loaded with MS Office and other software that came
with computers like AppleWorks, World Book, QuickTime, etc.). Internet service is
provided by BCPS (Baltimore County Public Schools) at no cost but is accessible only
from within the school.
__ Under the Grant proposal iBooks are available to
any teacher, signed out on rotating basis. One of the important goals was to help
equalize the computer accessibility for the teachers in the "old" section
of the school vs teachers in the "new" section. Under the county acquisition
policy, technology purchased under the "new" building program cannot be
moved into the "old" section because of various red tape between city and
county ownership of the structures. Both sections of the school boast a considerable investment in technology.
__
Another important basis for the grant was only about 1/3 of teachers within the school
system have their own computers at home. Most of the others have older computers
that don't work with the school's software, etc.
__ It was a wonderful visit, and a real treat to actually
meet some of the people benefiting from the UG Academy grant. Our thanks goes out
to Larry and Mical Carton, and Marie Ponzillo for being gracious MD Apple Corps hosts.
Again to Marie for a fun tour of Dulaney High School and for helping bringing this
program to students and her fellow teachers. Thanks goes out to Dulaney Principal
Lyle Patzkowsky, and Assistant Principal Melinda Garvin for a very nice reception
in the Dulaney library and for playing your part in quality education.
__ After our visit to Dulaney HS, the next stop was
Fridays Restaurant at the Baltimore Public Library where that evening's Maryland
Apple Corp meeting would be held. But that's another whole story all together.

What the Grants Board had to say:
It's too bad we cannot give all teachers, everywhere, a new iBook. If we could, you
probably would see a substantial jump in the computer literacy statistics in our
education system today. No computer manufacturer in their right mind would ever undertake
such a venture, so the challenge at hand is to make it happen for one teacher...
one school at a time.
__ While this is an uncomplicated proposal, it's one
that wil go a long way to helping the teachers of Dulaney High School embrace technology
into their teaching routine. Above all, it will lend not only a little help to these
teachers, it will provide some much needed enjoyment in computing, as well.
